Personally, if a big ass rock started talking to me, I'm going to the doctors to make sure I'm not insane, and then asking why the fuck the giant space rock is speaking because I sure as shit know it isn't devine. Deadspace does make use of something that could pass for cosmic horror, but with one major problem. So, seeing how fanatical and radical religious zealots across the world are over millenias old scriptures, it's not too far off to assume it'd be just the same as if a giant monolith with strange script all over it started communication with people and promising them eternal life.

Humans are very quick to follow others, believe what they're told without actually looking for answers themselves or being presented with evidence (and even when presented with hard evidence, people will still deny it), and even more still believe in some form of "higher power" and/or are superstitious in some manner or another.
